The average person who does not gamble will typically say that all casino games rely on luck and chance. Whilst this may be mostly true for some games like slots and roulette, poker is a different animal altogether. One of the reasons why poker is one of the most popular casino games is because you are testing your skill against another player as opposed to the random spin of a roulette wheel.

As a matter of fact, really good poker players need to be versed in quite a few skills ranging including being mathematically inclined, able to read other people such as interpret their emotions or body language, all in a split second to help them determine their next move – fold or raise. New players may try and bluff all the time and when you’re playing with a new group of players you may get away with this at first but sooner or later people will call your bluff and you’ll lose the game.

You need to strategise your position and bluffing too often or calling a lot will usually lead to you losing your cash quickly. One thing you also need to be is observant. Don’t play every hand, rather sit some hands out and observe your opponents to try and decipher their strategy. For example, even professional players have favourite hands but won’t always play them to avoid being too predictable.

Be observant, study the game, learn what skills are necessary and bet only what you can afford whilst sitting some games out and you’ll make good progress quickly.

Technically speaking, Texas Hold’em is a relatively easy game to understand but to play well, it can take a player years of training in order to win more often than lose. You have to learn when to play a hand and when to fold, and this ability takes experience. If you are playing at table where there are at least 7 players and you are a relative beginner to Texas Hold’em then you’ll need to know a few things before hand.

The first is recognising when you have a big hand and if you do, you should raise your bet, even if someone has already raised the pot before you. But, make sure you have one of these hands before you do: 2 Aces, 2 Kings, 2 Queens or an Ace and a King.

Conversely, a limp hand consists of pairs of upper level cards like 2 eights, 2 nines, 2 tens or 2 Jacks. If these are the cards you were dealt, you want to make a limp bet, or a minimum bet. If somone has already raised the pot by the time it gets to you, cut your losses and fold as there’s a good chance that person has a better hand.

There are other hands to learn about in Texas Hold’em but as you can see from just these two hands that if you don’t know what you are doing you are setting yourself up for defeat and that will ultimately eat away your bankroll and profits.

There are several online poker methods that you’ll want to consider as you progress in your career as a poker player. A few among the many are the Set Limit, the Straddle Method, the Freeze Out and the Running Out of money. They each offer their own level of excitement and below we’ll briefly discuss each.

So, what is a Set Limit? Basically this is when a group of players agree to both a minimum and a maximum wager so that each player is able raise their bets to a powerful level. If you have a good hand you want to be able to make a good raise and capitalise on the game at hand. This will also intimidate others to fold increasing your chance of winning. By using a Set Limit, each player will enter a minimum ante so the pot has a bit of money to begin the game. Essentially, it’s a gentleman’s agreement that bets are relatively even througout.

The Straddle Method involves the first player to bet his ante and the next player doubles this amount before the game commences. This double up is called the Straddle and the next player can either double the Straddle bet or fold. The betting ends when there are no more raises or the agreed upon maximum bet has been reached.

The Freeze Out is similar to betting in a regular game however, bet amounts are agreed upon before hand and it’s understood that only one player will win the pot.

Running Out of Money is similar to the Freeze Out in that the betting amounts are similar to a regular game but if a player exhausts his funds during the game then a second pot is added for the remaining players.
